Common MLS Photo Size Requirements

Every MLS sets its own rules, but most share the same basic shape: landscape orientation (a 4:3 aspect ratio, like 1024×768 or 2048×1536), a minimum size around 1024×768 pixels, and a reasonable file size so uploads don't time out.

Many MLSs and IDX feeds now recommend larger images — 1600×1200 or 2048×1536 — so listings look sharp on high-resolution phone and tablet screens. Portals like Zillow and Realtor.com also tend to display larger source photos better.

Oversized files (huge dimensions or ultra-high quality settings) slow down uploads and can get rejected or auto-compressed by the MLS anyway. Resizing to the recommended size before upload gives you a predictable, fast upload with no surprise compression.

Quick reference

1024×768 — common MLS minimum

1280×960 — safe mid-size option

1600×1200 — sharp on most portals

2048×1536 — recommended default

Tips for Resizing Listing Photos

Don't upscale small photos

Stretching a small photo up to hit a size requirement makes it look soft or blurry. Start with the largest original you have.

Keep the aspect ratio

Distorted photos are an instant tell that something was resized carelessly. This tool always scales proportionally — it never stretches or crops.

Use JPEG, not PNG

JPEG compresses photos far smaller than PNG with no visible quality loss at 85%+ quality — faster uploads, same look.

Check your MLS's rules

Minimums and maximums vary by board. When in doubt, 2048×1536 satisfies nearly every MLS and looks great everywhere else too.

Right size, but dark or dull?

Resizing fixes dimensions, not lighting. If your photos need brightening, color correction, or sky replacement, try FrameLifter's real estate photo enhancement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MLS photo size requirement?

Requirements vary by MLS, but most want landscape (4:3) photos with a minimum of around 1024×768 pixels. Many MLSs recommend larger, such as 1600×1200 or 2048×1536, for sharper display on IDX sites and listing portals.

What's the best photo size for MLS listings?

2048×1536 is a safe, high-quality choice that satisfies nearly every MLS's minimum and looks sharp on Zillow, Realtor.com, and other portals, without producing an oversized file that slows down uploads.

Will resizing photos hurt image quality?

Scaling down loses very little visible quality. Scaling up (upscaling) a small photo to hit a size requirement will make it look soft or blurry, so it's best to start with a photo that's already close to or larger than your target size.

Do my photos get uploaded to a server?

No. This resizer runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your photos are never sent to FrameLifter or any other server — they stay on your device the whole time.

Should I resize before or after enhancing my photos?

Either order works, but resizing after enhancement keeps more detail for the enhancement step to work with. If your photos are dark or dull, enhance them first, then resize the final files to your MLS's required dimensions.
